about us

We want to offer the finest exploration in the Rainforest with the Dracaena Wildlife Lodge. The lodge is located on the Cuyabeno River (lower part of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve), with 7 cabins built in the traditional Indian style of the jungle. Each hut has 2 rooms that can be single, double and triple accommodation, twins or matrimonial beds with mosquito nets to keep you safe from biting insects. All rooms have private bathrooms with showers. All cabins have an area where you will be able to relax in the hammocks or sitting to observe some species of birds and monkeys or to enjoy nature early in the morning or to listen to the nocturnal songs of the Amazon.

ITINERARY:

DAY

00: QUITO – AMAZONAS (L/D)The journey begins at night at 11:00 PM by bus starting from the Quito. You will drive the Andes down through the cloud forest into the rainforest to reach the small town ‘Lago Agrio’ after about six hours’ journey.
DAY 01: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / BL / D) The actual tour into the rainforest starts at  ‘El Puente’, the main access to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. Here you will have lunch (box lunch) and then rive in a motorized canoe on the Cuyabeno River for about 3 hours until you reach the lodge. After your arrival at the lodge, you will have time to recover and go on your first exploratory tour in the surroundings of the lodge. After dinner your bilingual guide will inform you about the activities of the following days.
DAY 02: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / L / D) After an early breakfast, you will begin exploring and use the early hours of the morning to observe the activities of the awakening tropical forest. . Later you will return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon you will take a trip on the Cuyabeno River, which will lead you through the dense forest landscape. 
DAY 03: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / L / D) As an early morning excursion, you will have the opportunity to observe the wildlife during its morning activities while the jungle awakens. After having your breakfast, you will follow the so-called “turtle trail” by using a motorized canoe to visit the Seoqueya community, home to some Siona indigenous families. 
In the afternoon you will travel by motorized canoe along the Cuyabeno River to the Laguna Grande.  Later you will continue your adventure and observe the nocturnal fauna of the river landscape. In particular, watch out for caimans before returning to the lodge.
DAY 04: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / L / D) This morning you have the opportunity to make an additional excursion, either by canoe or hiking.  At lunchtime, you will return to the lodge for a rest. In the afternoon, you will be able to explore the Cuyabeno River by canoe.
DAY 05: AMAZONAS – QUITO (B / BL) Today’s morning excursion includes a short trip by canoe.  After breakfast at the lodge you will have sufficient time to pack up your luggage for the return journey.  where you will arrive in Quito at around 21:00

01 TAG: QUITO – RAINFOREST (L/D)

The tour into the rainforest starts at 09:30 in the morning. You will drive for about 2.5 hours until you reach ‘El Puente’, the main access to the Cuyabeno nature reserve and the last place in civilization. Here you will have lunch (Lunch Box) and then drive in a motorized canoe on the Cuyabeno River for about 3 hours until you reach the lodge. With a little luck you can already observe the first monkey and bird species here. The river is extremely narrow in this region and allows you to experience the wildlife up close. After your arrival at the lodge, you will have time to recover and make your first exploration tour. After dinner your bilingual guide will inform you about the further activities of the following days

02 TAG: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / BL / D)

Before breakfast, you can paddle along the Rio Cuyabeno to Kapok Island in a canoe to discover more animals, especially monkeys. Here you also have good chances to see the freshwater dolphins in the beautiful river landscape. After breakfast, you will take a hike through the rainforest to familiarize yourself with the local flora and fauna and, of course, to look out for the animals of the jungle. In the afternoon you go with the motor canoe to the Laguna Grande (the “big Lagoon”). When exploring the lagoon in the paddle canoe, you will get to know the flooded forest (Igapó). This is a very special ecosystem of the rainforest, dominated by the huge macrolobium trees on which many epiphytes grow and are home to some of the local birds. While paddling across the lagoon, you will have a good chance to see the pink-colored freshwater dolphins and gray dolphins (Iniageoffrensis and Sotaliafluviatilis) and refresh yourself swimming in the calm sea. Later you will return by motorboat downstream to the Nicky Amazon Lodge. Use the time to relax before going on an optional night walk to get to know the nocturnal rain forest dwellers. Do not forget the flashlight!

03 TAG: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / L / D)

In the early morning you will take a trip through the primary rainforest where you have a good chance to discover different species of monkeys and birds, while the jungle dwellers come to life through the warmth of the morning sun and engage in active activity in the dense greenery. After breakfast, you will follow the course of the Rio Cuyabeno in the paddle canoe and then on foot to the “Taricaya Trail” (the turtle trail) to visit the Seoqueya community. Here live families of Siona, an indigenous group native to this part of the Amazon. A member of the family will show you how they prepare the Yuca bread, also called “Cassave”. If you want, you can of course help with it and at the end try the bread. Your guide will tell you about local traditions and cultures from the past to the present. In the afternoon you will paddle back to the lodge. After dinner, you will take a trip in search of the nocturnal caimans.

04 TAG: ADVENTURE IN AMAZONAS (B / L / D)

Before breakfast, take a hike through the jungle to continue your exploration and learn more about the ecology of the tropical rainforest. Of course you will also discover more of its tropical inhabitants here. After breakfast, you will take a longer excursion in the paddle canoe, the Rio Cuyabeno downstream. Afterwards you will walk through the rainforest with the nature guide, where he will share with you his knowledge of the characteristics and uses of various medicinal plants still used by the locals today. This knowledge is transmitted orally from generation to generation. On the hike, you will also look for the inhabitants of the jungle, such as amphibians, insects such as butterflies, centipedes, and mammals such as sloths and capibaras. Then, you will return with a motor canoe, upstream to the lodge. Before dinner, take another (optional) night walk through the forest to search for nocturnal species such as insects, spiders (even hand-sized tarantulas), snakes or colorful frogs, constantly accompanied by the nocturnal sounds of the jungle.

 

05 TAG: RAINFOREST – LAGO AGRIO – QUITO (B/L)

Today’s morning excursion includes a short trip by canoe. Take advantage of the early hours use to observe the different wild animals in their morning activities and say goodbye to the jungle. After breakfast at the lodge you will have enough time to organize the luggage for the return journey. It goes upstream in the civilization, ‘El Puente de Cuyabeno’. After lunch (lunch box), a private bus will take you back to Lago Agrio and from there you will drive back to Quito, you will arrive at around 21:00.

ARRIVAL TO LAGO AGRIO:

Tours to the lodges at Cuyabeno National Park start in Lago Agrio. The journey to Lago Agrio takes place from Quito either by private bus (international group, about 6 hours each way, night bus with departure at 23: 00h in Quito the evening before the tour – return trip after the tour with arrival in Quito at about 21: 30h) or by flight (about 40 minutes each way).

DAY 0: QUITOINTO THE AMAZON RAINFOREST  

At 23:00h you take a private bus from Quito driving down the Andes to Lago Agrio.

DAY 1: THE RAINFOREST ADVENTURE BEGINS (BL/D)

In the morning hours you reach the jungle town of Lago Agrio. The bus will drop you off at the Recreational Center Planeta Azul, where you have time to stretch your legs and can have an optional breakfast. The tour begins at 09h30am when you will be picked up at the Hotel D´ Mario and travel by bus/truck to El Puente (2 hours). Here you have lunch (boxlunch) before you continue with a motorized canoe towards the lodge. On the way, you make a stop and paddle along the Cuyabeno River. With a little bit of luck you will be able to observe monkeys and some of the many tropical birds at close range, as this part of the river is particularly narrow and therefore offers good opportunities to get very close to the animals. Later you continue to the lodge in a motorized canoe again. After dinner your naturalist bilingual guide gives you a briefing on the upcoming activities during the next days.

 

DAY 2: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)                  

After an early breakfast, you drive with the motorized canoe down the Cuyabeno River deeper into the dense jungle until you reach the Rio Aguarico. Following the river you reach your campsite at the entrance of the Zancudococha community (a covered tent camp). After building up your camp, you’ll have time to explore the area. In the evening, you will take a night walk to look for nocturnal animals while listening to the sounds of the jungle.

 

DAY 3 & 4: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)

These days will spend you exploring the rainforest. The early morning hours are the best time to observe the many creatures in the emerging rainforest. On canoe trips you will explore the Iripari and Zancudo lakes as well as the surrounding rainforest in search of the tropical inhabitants of this natural paradise.

DAY 5: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)

After breakfast, you navigate upstream Aguarico River. Box lunch. Along the way you will stop at riverside villages of local communities to see their handicrafts. In the afternoon you travel up the Cuyabeno River to Nicky Lodge. Enjoy the late afternoon in the lodge to relax, reflect about your adventure and enjoy the sounds of the surrounding rainforest.

 

DAY 6: FROM THE RAINFOREST TO QUITO (B/BL)

The brisk morning hours are the best time to see the rainforest thriving activity. After breakfast, you return by canoe down the Cuyabeno River and back along the Aguarico river to “El Puente del Cuyabeno” from where you will drive back to Lago Agrio which you reach around 16:00pm. From here you travel from the Amazon rainforest back up into civilization in Quito in the middle of the Andes.

ARRIVAL TO LAGO AGRIO:

Tours to the lodges at Cuyabeno National Park start in Lago Agrio. The journey to Lago Agrio takes place from Quito either by private bus (international group, about 6 hours each way, night bus with departure at 23: 00h in Quito the evening before the tour – return trip after the tour with arrival in Quito at about 21: 30h) or by flight (about 40 minutes each way).

ITINERARY:

*Location: Upper and lower parts of Cuyabeno Reserve, navigation along the Cuyabeno and Aguarico rivers until the border with Peru and exploration of the lakes around Lagartococha.

 

DAY 0: QUITOINTO THE AMAZON RAINFOREST  

At 23:00h you take a private bus from Quito driving down the Andes to Lago Agrio.

DAY 1: THE RAINFOREST ADVENTURE BEGINS (BL/D)

In the morning hours you reach the jungle town of Lago Agrio. The bus will drop you off at the Recreational Center Planeta Azul, where you have time to stretch your legs and can have an optional breakfast. The tour begins at 09h30am when you will be picked up at the Hotel D´ Mario and travel by bus/truck to El Puente (2 hours). Here you have lunch (boxlunch) before you continue with a motorized canoe towards the lodge. On the way, you make a stop and paddle along the Cuyabeno River. With a little bit of luck you will be able to observe monkeys and some of the many tropical birds at close range, as this part of the river is particularly narrow and therefore offers good opportunities to get very close to the animals. Later you continue to the lodge in a motorized canoe again. After dinner your naturalist bilingual guide gives you a briefing on the upcoming activities during the next days.

 

DAY 2: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)                  

After an early breakfast, you start travelling by motorized canoe along the Cuyabeno River deeper into dense jungle until you reach Rio Aguarico. Following the river you reach your first campsite located at the entrance of the Zancudococha community. After setting up your camp you have some time to explore the surroundings. In the evening you will go for a night walk looking out for the nocturnal animals enjoying the sounds of the jungle.

 

DAY 3: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)

After breakfast you continue downstream the Aguarico river and then head to your camp site situated deep in remote jungle along Lagartococha river accessing the flooded area where you discover some lagoons connected by Black water Rivers. Here you can admire a different ecosystem which exists in the flooded forest or varzea region. If time and climate allow, you will also visit the Imuyalake. Box lunch. In the afternoon you enjoy swimming in the DelfinCocha lake while observing some freshwater pink dolphins (IniaGeofrensis ) swimming close to you. Campsite.

 

DAY 4: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)

Today you spend the whole day exploring the rainforest. The early morning hours are the best time to observe the rainforests thriving activity. Therefore you make an excursion at sunrise to observe the abundance of birds and wildlife. After breakfast you head by motor canoe upstream Lagartococha River near the border with Peru. First your naturalist guide takes you to a different ecosystem, Terra Firme forest, where you hike through pristine primary rainforest. Later you continue by motor canoe to a remote Secoya Community where Peruvian and Ecuadorian indigenous people live together. Box Lunch. While the local guide explains their customs and habits which their ancestors have taught throughout generations, a secoya woman offers you Casave, the bread of the jungle, a traditional meal prepared from yucca (manioc). Later you return to your campsite. After dinner, you venture out on a night excursion to search for Caimans.

 

DAY 5: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)

In the early morning, you travel by motorized canoe up the Lagartococha River to observe the species-rich bird- and wildlife. After breakfast, you continue downstream along the Lagartococha River and navigating to the Aguarico River you finally reach your fourth campsite located near the local Quichua (Kichwa) community. According to the conditions you may visit the community before enjoying the sunset in the jungle.  

 

DAY 6: RAINFOREST ADVENTURE (B/L/D)

After breakfast, you navigate upstream Aguarico River. Box lunch. Along the way you will stop at riverside villages of local communities to see their handicrafts. In the afternoon you travel up the Cuyabeno River to Nicky Lodge. Enjoy the late afternoon in the lodge to relax, reflect about your adventure and enjoy the sounds of the surrounding rainforest.

 

DAY 7: FROM THE RAINFOREST TO QUITO (B/BL)

The brisk morning hours are the best time to see the rainforest thriving activity. After breakfast, you return by canoe down the Cuyabeno River and back along the Aguaricoriver to TierrasOrientales from where you will drive back to Lago Agrio which you reach around 16:00pm. From here you travel from the Amazon rainforest back up into civilization in Quito in the middle of the Andes.

REQUIREMENTS:

For this nature trip a healthy fitness is necessary to enjoy canoe trips and short hikes up to 3 hours in tropical weather.
